An alternate route to Everest Base Camp, the Gokyo Lake trek is second popular destination in the Everest area. This is actually a trek to glacial lakes, beginning at Lukla, which takes you into the heart of the mountains and the culture of Sherpa people in the Everest region. We fly to Lukla airstrip and start to trek with an easy walk to Phakding. From here the trail goes up crossing Dudh Koshi River few times then a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar actually is a bustling Sherpa village providing shops, bakery, banks, internate and long distant call as well. Before heading up, a day is spent here for acclimatization and just soaking up the atmosphere. The trail goes quickly to the to of the village with beautiful view of mt. Ama Dablam to the right and gradually the Tengboche hill with an old monastery and other mountains. The Gokyo trail leaves Everest Base Camp trail from Khumjung and passes through the interesting Sherpa settlements with tremendous scenery, as we climb towards Gokyo we have superb views down the valley to Kongtega and up towards Cho Oyu. The view from Gokyo-Ri is spectacular with the best being obtained after a short climb above the lake. There are more lakes further to visit but need a full day with packed food and drink. Finally retrace down normally following the valley’s eastern side to Fortse village or same trail and descend to Namche then to Lukla from and fly back to Kathmandu.
